Just days after a tiger mauled a man to death at an animal park in Ningbo, video footage has surfaced showing a zebra unleashing a brutal attack on a zoo worker in Guangzhou.
The incident occurred at Chimelong Safari Park and, based on reports, it took over two minutes to free the man, surnamed Li, from the renegade zebra.
Some media outlets have stated the incident happened “three days" after the Ningbo attack, although several sources (including an eyewitness) have informed That’s that the incident in the video actually occurred on December 29. A New York Post article also backs up this claim.
The 15-second video circulating online shows the animal bite down on Li’s left hand before dragging him helplessly around the enclosure while coworkers, one of whom is carrying a stick, chase the zebra.
There does appear to be further misinformation about the attack circulating online, with the Mirror reporting that the incident happened at the same zoo as the tiger attack in Zhejiang. This is of course patently false, as the episodes happened in cities that are over 1,350 kilometers apart.
Zebras are generally quite timid and shy, although animal behaviorists note they can attack if they feel threatened.
Chimelong Safari Park confirmed the attack in a statement, stating Li suffered “minor injuries” to his hand. To see Chimelong Safari Park’s full statement on the incident, click here.
